Moving can be an overwhelming experience, and there's no point denying it. People usually associate moving experience with stress and tension. But, the way to overcome this is to be prepared. And there's no better way to prepare yourself, than by making a moving supply list. This way, you'll know that you have everything you need when the time comes.

Moving supply list

When moving and thinking about the necessary supplies, you'll find some to be very obvious. However, there are supplies that you can't think of now, but that will prove to be necessary. And other supplies will simply make the whole process easier. In the end, it's easier to find a way a repurpose leftover packing materials, then to successfully move without these supplies.

Useful tools

Basic tools like wrenches or screwdrivers can be very useful for your move. So, you should consider getting them before the big day comes. You might need them, either for obvious reasons, such as dissembling furniture or for something that could unexpectedly come up.

Big moving supplies

If you're going to move without assistance, you are going to need some bigger moving supplies:

  • you'll need to rent a truck
  • get dollies for moving around your furniture and bigger appliances
  • old blankets, for protecting your furniture during transportation
  • lifting straps for lifting your heavier items
  • cargo straps make sure that your items don't move around while being transported

So, as you can see, a DIY move requires some supplies that might not be so cheap. But, you can save money by hiring affordable moving assistance. That way, you'll be able to skip getting these extra supplies, and you'll get the help you need.

Boxes

Boxes are the most basic and necessary items as far as moving supplies go. Different shapes and different sizes, the more the better. You can get them for free at local stores. Also, you'll find great boxes for you glassware at the local liquor store. And when you're finished with your move, you might want to learn how to reuse packing supplies.

The more boxes you get, the better.

A useful tip - when packing, don't overfill the boxes, but also, don't leave them too empty, as the items inside might break.

Small tools

Along with boxes, get some duct tape. And use it generously, in order to keep your belongings safe. And, as you should keep it organized, you need to label the boxes. So, get some labels or use permanent markers, in order to know what is in each box.  And use several covers of them, since it's good to have a system. Also, you'll need scissors and box cutters. They'll come very useful once the unpacking starts.

Scissors and box cutters are necessary for unpacking.

Protective packing material

If you want to pack fragile items, it's essential to have a lot of protective packing materials on your moving supply list. You should use it to fill in the boxes with this material and fixate them with some duct tape. This way your fragile items will have the best chance of arriving at the destination in one piece. Also, get foam corner protectors to protect your appliances.

  • Paper - packing paper is the most common material used in this purpose, as almost everyone has old newspapers at least. However, be careful about the ink getting on your items.
  • Packing peanuts - you can combine with foam sheet in order to protect your electronic appliances
  • Bubble/Foam sheet - is one of the most efficient materials used in protecting fragile items
  • Plastic wrap - can be used for wrapping up the items, and also under the bottle cap, for preventing liquid leaking. Also, you can use it as a material for filling the empty space in a box.
  • Airbags - these are also used for filling up the empty space.

Paper is commonly used as a protective packing material.

Plastic bags

Ziplock bags of various sizes can be useful for storing your smaller important belongings. You can use them for things that you want to keep separated from other bigger items. And don't forget protective covers for your furniture. Other than these, garbage bags will be great for when you're done with unpacking.

Essential bag

Choose either a bag or a box that's not very bulky, and that you can bring with you. In it, you can keep all of the other important belongings you'll need while on the road. Or, for immediately after the move. It's important that it's not too big, and that it can fit it under a seat, so it doesn't take up too much space.

Other supplies

These supplies will make the whole process much easier. Cleaning supplies, for example, will let you leave clean space once you're done with it. But, it will also help you move your stuff into a clean new environment. From paper towels, sponges, a product for cleaning glass surfaces and for the floor, they are all useful. But, you don't only want to keep things clean, you want to be safe, too. So, use gloves and masks, in order to protect yourself from dirt, dust or bacteria.

The list

This moving supply list should not be the only list to have while moving. Make a list by writing down all the tasks you need to do and then use it to check your moving timeline. Also, make a list of all the items in each box, so you’re able to know at all times where your things are. Of course, if you think of anything else to write down, it's highly desirable. The more organized your move is, the better. If you use a list, you'll know that you're giving your best to prepare for the move. Of course, if required, you'll improvise. Life is often not very predictable, so improvisation might be necessary. Good luck!
